The hinge bars of the PTO can be adjusted to control tension and pull the buttress down around the patella, thereby enhancing patella stabilization. The PTO works dynamically, meaning it functions as the patient performs normal knee movements such as walking or running. As the knee extends to its fullest, there is progressive compression of the lateral soft tissue surrounding the knee cap, reaching its peak force at full extension.
